7TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON RURAL TOURISM – TRAVEL INSTRUCTIONS
The island of Rab, known as the “Island of Happiness”, is well connected to the mainland and major cities. To help you plan your journey as easily as possible, here are the key travel options.
Arrival by plane
Participants arriving from abroad can use the two nearest airports:
1. Zagreb Airport (ZAG) – Franjo Tuđman (distance 230 km)
o By car: Directly from the airport via the A1 motorway southbound (direction Senj/Stinica). The drive to the Stinica ferry port takes approximately 3 hours.
o By bus: The airport is connected by a regular shuttle bus to the Zagreb Bus Terminal. From there, direct lines depart to the island of Rab.
o Private transfers: Organized transport services (van or minibus) are available directly from the airport to Rab.
2. Rijeka Airport (RJK) – Island of Krk (distance 70 km)
o The closest airport to the island of Rab.
o Transfer: From the airport, a taxi or rental car is recommended to the Valbiska ferry port (approx. 25 minutes drive), followed by a ferry to Lopar on Rab.
Arrival by car
• From Zagreb: A1 motorway to Žuta Lokva interchange, then via Senj along the coastal road D8 to the port of Stinica (approx. 220 km).
• From Rijeka: Adriatic coastal road (E65 and D8) south to the port of Stinica or via the Krk Bridge to the port of Valbiska (approx. 120 km).
Ferry lines (Main ways of arrival)
Regardless of your direction of travel, you will reach the island via one of the two ferry routes:
• Stinica (mainland) – Mišnjak (Rab)
o Travel time: 15 minutes
o Frequency: Continuous departures every 1 to 2 hours
o Tip: Tickets can be purchased at the port or online on the Rapska plovidba website
• Valbiska (Krk) – Lopar (Rab)
o Travel time: 80 minutes
o Frequency: Daily at 7:45 and 18:20 from Krk (Valbiska) to Rab (Lopar), and at 5:45 and 16:00 from Rab (Lopar) to Krk
o Suitable for: Travellers coming from Rijeka, Istria or via Krk Airport
o Tip: Tickets can be purchased at the port or online on the Jadrolinija website
Arrival by bus
• Direct lines: The island of Rab is connected daily with Rijeka and Zagreb
• Ferry crossing: The bus uses the Stinica – Mišnjak ferry line, and the ferry ticket is included in the bus fare
• Main bus station: Located in the town of Rab (Palit), about 600 meters from the historic centre
• Departure from Zagreb: Daily at 11:30, travel time approx. 5 h 30 min – more at www.akz.hr
• Departure from Rijeka: Daily at 14:00, travel time approx. 3 h – more at www.arriva.com.hr/hr-hr/kvarner/rab
High-speed catamarans (Passengers only)
For participants travelling without a car, fast ferry lines are available:
• Rijeka – Rab – Novalja (Pag): Travel time approx. 1 h 45 min
• Zadar – Silba – Rab – Krk – Rijeka: Travel time approx. 2 h 15 min
Useful tips for participants
• Reservations: We recommend purchasing ferry tickets in advance via mobile apps (Jadrolinija or Rapska plovidba)
• Timetable: Before departure, be sure to check the official carrier websites for possible changes due to weather conditions (e.g. strong bora wind)
