Nikola Bašić
Nikola Bašić, a prominent Croatian architect and urban planner, was born in Murter. He graduated in 1972 in Sarajevo and, after working there and at the Zadar-based company “Donat,” founded his own studio, MARINAPROJEKT, in 1991. Since 2016, he has been a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU), where he also serves as President of the Scientific Council for Tourism and Space.
His work is characterized by a focus on authenticity and innovation, ranging from residential and nautical architecture to projects in the cultural landscape. He is the author of the world-renowned installations Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun in Zadar, as well as the monument to firefighters on Kornat.
He has received numerous awards, including the Viktor Kovačić Lifetime Achievement Award, three Vladimir Nazor State Awards, the European Prize for Urban Public Space, and many others. He is a recipient of the Order of Danica Hrvatska with the image of Marko Marulić, the Order of Duke Branimir with Necklace, and the French honor Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Split.
